Buying Guidelines for Laminate Flooring.

November 14th, 2011

One of the best types of flooring that you can install at home is laminate flooring. Laminate floors look like wooden floors but they are in fact made of paper boards that are pressed together and covered with a thick layer of strong film to make them sturdy and durable. You will never know the difference once this type of flooring is installed in your home.

This floor type is cheaper because they are made of paper boards instead of solid wood. But do not get the wrong idea that this floor will not last long. In fact, good quality laminate planks can last for up to 25 years, especially when properly taken care of.

If you are planning to buy laminate planks that you can install at home, here are some considerations that you need to know.

  • First, you need to get the measurement of your room to know how many and what size of planks you need to buy. To get the area, you need to get the length and width of the room and multiply the results. The product of these two figures is the floor area. You can easily compare the floor area and the size of the planks because both use square foot as the unit of measurement. You can use a tape measure to get the area and a piece of paper and a pen to jot down the measurements.
  • Another important consideration when buying laminate flooring is the price. Although laminate planks are priced from $1 to $4, you should consider buying laminates that are priced at $3 or $4 to ensure quality. This is one of those cases when expensive could mean high quality. It is better to pay a little extra than to have damaged floors that need to be replaced after only a few years.
  • Do not forget to buy a package which includes almost everything that you will need to install the flooring. The package should have underlayment, moldings and trim, and other materials. You do not need to glue or nail down the laminates so do not be surprised if you do not find these materials in the package. Most laminate planks are installed using the snap and lock mechanism.
  • Read the package carton carefully to check all the details that you need to know about the laminates. The carton usually includes the materials included in the package, the size of the planks, the AC rating or the hardness rating, and the installation procedure. If there are things that you do not understand, do not hesitate to ask one of the sales persons. It is better to ask questions from the onset than regret your purchase later on.
  • If you are not confident about your ability to install the flooring, you can ask the home improvement center if they offer installation services to their customers. Hiring an installer from the same shop where you bought your laminates is cheaper than hiring a professional from another company.

Buying laminate flooring for your home is easy as long as you follow the rules and guidelines stated in this article.
