Leaning about Laminate Flooring

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

Are you thinking about remodeling your home, starting with laminate flooring? But do you know what this type of flooring is? In a nutshell, laminate flooring or laminate tiling is a type of flooring that uses synthetic floor tiles attached together to make a seamless, natural floor.

Each laminate tile has several layers that make it durable to constant human traffic. The first layer is a transparent layer that is specially made so that it can withstand scuff marks, scratching, staining, dents and even light burns from constant traffic. Its second layer is made of a photographic or decorative layer that makes the tile aesthetically pleasing. Most laminate tiles come in various wood, stone and even ceramic designs, copying such natural flooring options perfectly which makes laminate such a popular flooring option. The next layer for the laminate is the center layer that is made of highly dense fiberboard that allows it to support constant foot traffic. Lastly, there is a bottom layer that stabilizes and strengthens the laminate.

Laminate tiles are relatively simple to install compared to other flooring types like wood or stone. Each tile clicks or locks to the other tile easily, making glue unnecessary. However, there are still some laminates that use glue to keep them in place so best to check your tile supplier first before buying a set. Do not though that most tiles are now glue-free, as that is the best do-it-yourself type of tile laminate.

Aside from being easy to install, one of the advantages of using this type of flooring is that it looks very chic without being too expensive. Getting a laminate tile flooring with a wooden applique is a whole lot cheaper compared to getting an actual wooden flooring. Expensive hardwood floors may make your house beautiful but it can also break into your savings as hardwood floors cost an arm and a leg to install. The cheaper alternative is to find a hardwood design of a laminate tile similar to that of your expensive hardwood floor’s finish and you can install this home improvement at less than half the price.

Laminate floors are also highly durable compared to wooden flooring. Once the polish fades, hardwood can rot, it can easily be scratched or worse, termites can invade it and wither your expensive flooring away. With laminate tiles, that will not be a problem since it has a protective translucent covering that prevents it from scratching even if there is high foot traffic.

One of the best things about this type of floor is that it is very easy to clean, without the risk of it fading or needing to be sent to the dry cleaners like a rug. If a spill happens on the floor, you can easily wipe it down with a mob to absorb the water as it will not seep inside the tile unlike in wooden floorboards. For pet owners, those with cats or dogs, this flooring type is also resistant from animal hair which is a constant problem for carpets. Animal dander can easily be swept away from your laminate flooring with a broom.
